Hey Everyone!
Just been doing some research and I discovered the origin of three different previously unidentified silent precancels. I sent the information to the Editor of the "Silent Precancels" and he replied with an acceptance of my findings. Kinda cool!
Two of the precancels were from Brockport, NY and were used by Moore-Shafer Shoe Mfg. Co. both used in 1898. The other was actually a stampless cover precancel from circa 1853 used by Swan's Atmospheric Soda Fountain from Rochester, NY if you see one keep it!
Keep Collecting! Keep Researching! Mike

Mike, Congratulations! It must be rewarding to be able to recognized by an authority on Silent Precancels. Do you have these stamps in your possession, or can you post a photo of an example? Marty |

Well Thanks everyone!
I like to own these but alas no! I have an image of both Brockport, NY silents. I have been trying to upload the image, but the file name uses symbols with numbers & letters, apparently this system only can upload numbers & Letters only. This evening I may have identified a forth. The editor knew of possible locations for that issue. I sent my analysis of of the know options showing how the 2 locations would not work and why the third was the one! I'll fill you in after he reviews the information and decides to accept it or not.
But I'm currently working on my Mexican Eagles and possible variations.

I know this thread hasn't been active in a long time, but I just have to ask. I've had this one hanging around for years, and I think it's a silent precancel... what do you think? -Allen |

Allen, Yes it is a silent precanel.
There are a few possibilities.
Utica, NY, 1 horizontal line 1mm wide, Used by John H. Sheehan & Co., medicinal supplies
Minneapolis, MN, 1 horizontal line, 1-1.5mm wide faint gray ink (unlikely) used by T.M. Roberts Supply House
Libonia, PA, 2 types both used by George W. Park, nursery, l line either vert/horiz. 2-4mm wide irregular outline, gray ink. " " " " " 2-3mm wide Breaks in line on some stamps, black ink.
There are other single line/bar types, in any event these are the most likely.
My bet is Utica, NY, ink looks black & it looks about 1mm wide, but you will need to check out on your end.

Thank you very much, Mike! That one's been sitting there making me wonder for years, and I'm really glad to have my suspicions confirmed. Now, where exactly to mount that piece...
Incidentally, although the line is definitely black, it is exactly 2mm wide, which makes me wonder about the Utica origin, and makes me lean more towards the Libonia, PA.

No problem, Allen!
If it's 2mm wide & black it is Libonia. Value listed at $15 on cover.

I have heard that the day you stop learning, is the day you die - - or something like that.
While I consider myself a reltaively advanced collector, it never amazes me to learn something new and the title "Silent Precancel" is just that.
It is things like this that keeps us all humble I guess <G>
Very interesting

I think that's a major part of the reason I enjoy stamp collecting/philately so much... there is ALWAYS something new to learn.

Allen, A piece is not the same as a cover unless the piece still has the senders info on it. The catalog this info comes from is 1995 so value may have increased.
