AZStamper, That's a beautiful enlarged section of your stamp but I can't see evidence of a grill on your photo. If there is one, it must be a weak grill. Could you post a scan of the reverse side and if necessary, reduce the resolution a little so that we can see a larger section of the stamp with it's grill?

OK, thanks for the pic. I agree with Marty. I don't see a grill at all; not an obvious one, at least. Now, I'm going to ask a very off-beat question.

AZStamper, is there any possibility that we are not talking about the same thing when we use the term "grill". For example, the criss-crossing line network that I have circled in black in your scan below -- is there any possibility that you may be thinking that is the grill?

I apologize if that seems like a silly question. I've just been involved in way too many discussions in which it turns out there was fundamental difference in terminology that was causing the confusion.

The philatelic term "grill" as it applies these US stamp issues refers to a rectangular array of physical indentations that have been made into the paper, not the design of the stamp.

If there is no confusion, then we can proceed. If there is some confusion, better to clear it up now.

Thank you KHJ for the clarification, I am familar with the grill. I have done research and just from what is on the internet about grill's I have seen photos and to my understanding it is like a plate that embosses the stamps in production. I am just having a hard time seeing the embossing on this stamp. I will have to take a photo of the back of the stamp as Marty has requested. Give me a couple of days to get that done and will post asap. What size should I reduce the resolution to?
Thank you all for your help in this.

Try at 1000 to see if that will scan the entire stamp and still be within the posting limits. Some members have scanned at a very high resolution and somehow reduced the image size in another program. I don't know how to do that, so make it as high of a resolution as possible and remain within the 100kb to post most of the stamp back or at least the entire grill area plus a little extra. Again, play with the contrast and brightness to accentuate the grill. On my scanner, a low brightness and medium high contrast have given me the best results. Your's of course, may differ.

I am not sure how to scan it at a higher resolution. I was thinking the criss cross was the grille, or maybe the lines on Georges face? I can not find pictures online that point out exactly what the grill is and what direction it is pointing. I only have the photo in my posession now, I dont have access to scan it again, any more ideas?

Check this website to find photos of grills: www.theswedishtiger.com Grills will always have an appearance similar to a checkerboard, never diagonal crisscrossing such as a knurled look.

A-Zstamper, nuggethill's photo is a nice scan of a grill. As you can see, a grill punctures a stamp. A grill has nothing to do with the printing of the stamp and was done after a stamp was printed and gummed.

If you can scan the back of your stamp at the same (or smaller) resolution you used for the front, we might be able to help you more.

Are these posts helping or are we still missing the mark for your questions?
