As most of you folks know... I'm a big history fan.

I've read a number of books about FDR, including the greatly detailed 1200+ page tome by Lord Black. When I went to visit Phil & Jopie, they took us to Hyde Park. What a great time for a history buff like me.

Here's a little background before I show you this cover. Everyone knew FDR was a stamp collector. People wrote to FDR and in those days, Presidents and Prime Ministers often wrote back!

When FDR died in 1945, his collection was auctioned off by H.R. Harmers of New York City. The collection was a standard hobby collection, no great rarities. But... it was from FDR's collection.. so it was hammered for much over catalogue.

Everything that was auctioned from the late President's collection was stamped with a rubber stamp, by H.R. Harmers.

Look at this cover, postmarked Independence Day, 1938:

On the front, note the 18-cent Special Delivery rate, properly paid, mostly with Prexies, and the date and place for the postmark... addressed to "The President". On the back, note the rubber stamp from Harmers, The Washington, DC "Special Del" section postmark.

I picked this up at last night's OPS meeting.

David

Hi David
What a great cover.
My mom is a HUGE fan of FDR. He and the rest of the Roosevelts are her main collecting interest. She has postcards, photos, stamps and covers. A total of 5 albums for the Roosevelts.
Here are a few of her best items.

Oh, in case you wonder, that is NOT tape on the envelope. The plastic is just small clear stamp mounts. We didn't have anything else at the time.
Following is the envelope that this letter came in.

These next two were envelopes sent to Roosevelt. It's just too bad we didn't have the letters for them. That would have been great.

A Roosevelt Inauguration Cover for 1933

And last two covers. One with Churchill and the other with Teddy Roosevelt

Wow David, you sure lucked out with a nice piece. I always love owning cool historical items like that. When I was in the Rhine Valley, I was so tempted to buy a beer stein with a piece of the Berlin Wall on it...but $$$ sadly.

Doodles:

Very nice covers! You and I shall have lots to talk about at Christmas! I'm buying the tea at Tim Horton's!

Phil: When we were last down to your place, and met the Big Jose, I mentioned that he you took us to FDR's residence. He was very gracious in saying that I was a visitor, and DID have to see the local sights. I still laugh when I think of the meeting, and he was calling the auction. Wow! The look on his face when he was auctioning the FDR cover!

All: Thank-you... I'm making a special page in my U.S. album for this one.

David

What is the correct form when writing and addressing the American President?

In Canada, if the Prime Minister's name is John Smith, his title is:

The Right Honourable John Smith,
Prime Minister of Canada.

You would address him as:

Mr. Prime Minister
Prime Minister
or
Mr. Smith.

You would intoduce him as:
The Right Honourable John Smith, or
The Right Honourable The Prime Minister.

I know if I met Barack Obama, I would address him as "Mr. President". Would I also be permitted to address him as "Mr. Obama"? As well, if I wrote him a letter, what would his title be?

I will be at the National War Memorial, here in Ottawa for Remembrance Day, in full uniform. His Royal Highness The Prince Charles will be there with his wife Her Royal Highness The Dutchess of Cornwall. I know if I meet him I am to salute him and adress him as "Your Royal Highness", and thereafter, "Sir".

Just wondering... you know us Canadians... protocol! Protocol!

David
