May I make a suggestion that anyone listing things either for auction or for sale, to put down if they will accept paypal or not. I think it would be easier right from the start for buyers to know for sure. Also it might help if you are looking to buy something and your preferred method of paying was though paypal, that it might also help to put that down as well. It's just a thought. I always pay by paypal and I would prefer, although it's not always necessary, to be paid by paypal. It's just easier for me.

You're quite right, Doodles. I should have put that on mine. I only just signed up for Paypal, haven't even used it yet. Steve |

Great idea, In case anyone has doubts about PayPal, I have used it for about 4 years and am very pleased with them. The only cost is the reasonable fee PayPal charges a seller (buyers pay no fees). Fees to a seller are 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30. Cross border or currency exchange does have an additional fee that is also reasonable. marty |

The disadvantage to paypal is the buyer can cancel and get the money back after they receive the item. It has happened to me. |

i have heard a lot about that jaxom. can you elaborate on that? Thanks. Can they receive the money back even after they have left positive feedback? |

Well, jaxom makes it sound like it's an easy and commonplace occurrence. That's not true. The buyer can't just "cancel" and be done with you left holding the bag. We've done tens of thousands of transactions with Paypal without a single chargeback. The buyer must have good reason and provide proof or in the case of items not received, the seller must not be able to come up with proof it's delivered. The buyer also leaves themselves open to fraud charges if they lie to get a chargeback.
If you own a business and have a merchant account to accept credit cards it's no different with them. Your buyers can file for a chargeback with Their credit card company after the sale. Just like a check can still bounce after it "clears", which most people don't know. The $100 bill you took yesterday could turn up counterfeit today too.
There is risk in business and Paypal is no different, but the risk isn't any greater than with anything else. |

Dear Bobby, Thanks so much for sharing your insight with us. I live in a part of the world where fraud is a way of life. I am dealing with unscrupulous buyers as we speak. I would appreciate your advice on this. Lets say I sell something to a customer through ebay for 100 bucks they get it dont leave feedback and 6 months or a year later they ask for a chargeback. am I supposed to provide proof 6 months or even a year later? Can they still file for a chargeback even if they have already left positive feedback. Thanks |

For PayPal, the buyer has 45 days from the date of payment to file a claim. |

K,
i mean chargeback you could call your credit company even after 4 months and reverse the charges. I am wondering if there is a limit to that. It better not be 6 years. |

Basically, after 45 days, as a seller you have nothing to worry about from PayPal. I do not believe that a credit card will accept a claim against PayPal, but I could be mistaken. The credit card company will almost always ask you if you have contacted the vendor to resolve the issue, before they will consider a chargeback. Again, I find it very unlikely that the credit card company would accept a chargeback against PayPal. Most credit card companies also have a time limit to filing claims. This varies among the companies, but if I remember correctly, it's usually around 60 days. PayPal resolves claims pretty quickly, even if it is difficult to file a claim sometimes. So after 60 days, I would say you have nothing to worry about from either PayPal or credit card companies. If someone has a different understanding of this usually works, please post and correct me. k |

K,
a vendor once sold me a very expensive not mid three figures and then did not deliver. I filed a claim with PayPal they said more than 45 days passed sorry. I called the cc company and did a chargeback it was easily more than 2 months at that point. I got my money back. Then I have heard stories that some charges were reversed after a year and so I was wondering if thats true |

I agree PayPal is probably the most convenient source to use. I'm just a bit weary to use it right away after they selected the wrong payment source (a bank account I've not used much, I selected a credit card, yet...)last night when I bought something, refused to cancel the transaction (even when I called them right away), which resulted in me having to wire money into that account to avoid overdraft charges. |

Please keep in mind that some of us here may have paypal but do not always list it for the following reason. Some here some times list lots with penny stamps. We share with others our dupes at a very low or even at a loss to other collectors. When dealing with lots like these some of us just throw a buck or two in the letter and send it on the way. Hence no fees.
Now I know you may think that many should not do this and that is fine. But this forum and environment on SCF has a lot of trust between ourselves. And ones that break this are quickly singled out.
Just a thought to add so others may know why paypal is not listed sometimes and then other times it is. |
