Interesting...The photo is of a German helmet with bullet holes. The Maltese cross on the paper would indicate a WWI grave. The stamp shows a French helmet mounted, obviously on a French grave. Wonder where your grandfather got that picture. Are the any more like that? xxxBud |

This was the typical way to bury soldiers during wartime, but usually instead of a piece of tree trunk, the fallen soldier's rifle was used as an upright (the bayonet stabbed into the ground) and the helmet put on top, sometimes with one of the dog tags for identification.
I think the photograph may be of WWII vintage, and either further indicated that it was a German grave, or that the fallen soldier held the Iron Cross.
As for the French stamp, yes, it shows a French grave. |

Tina...Wonderful pictures. I'm assuming that's your grandfather. I had two cousins who fought on the Russian front. Only one came back. He went on to become a big-shot in German radio & early Television. So many years ago. Bud |

Thanks for sharing the photos. My Mom's Maiden name was Yeager and my maternal Grandma's maiden name was Heidergott so I've got some German ancestry. Seeing those pictures makes me curious about my German heritage. Been to Germany a few times while in the Air Force - It's a lovely place- would like to go back again sometime.
And yes, I thought there was a resemblence between the picture and stamp in the starting entry of this thread.

G'Day Tina great photo's of a very interesting topic,my father-in-law served in the German army in an SS division,I believe he joined it in Holland though I don't know which division it was. I think there are still some photos around of him in uniform, when I remember where they are I'll post them. regards Harry |
