Thanks Bruce! info very helpful, those brown stains-never thought they were alive! fungi! just thought they were ordinary paper browning and discoloring due to stamp paper's old age.
So what I did years ago was simply resoak with very mild soap, then soak rinse off and then sun dry. The result is visually better than before.
I'll use a UV light and take a look see on these "foxing" thanks for the info

Hi Bruce, just looked at the "foxing" under UV light.
Question - isnt UV light a sort of disinfecting light, so the germs will get dead when hit by UV light, is that right? in short, the foxing will stop?
thanks! |

Actually it depends on whether the UV emits long or shortwave. What we collectors have in our UV lamps (also known as "Black light" or "Wood's light") is longwave; it is limited to lower energy, longer waves and does not "kill" anything. But it is great for detecting all kinds of stuff. However, if you manage to get a shortwave lamp somewhere, then you must handle it with extreme care and with proper shielding/protection as it can/will destroy DNA.

I know some of you are reluctant to give advice... but I could sure use some.. I would like to try and remove some rust spots from some stamps.. I just don't know how other then the bleach method and hydrogen peroxide method.. If you don't wish to post on the forum, then email me. I promise I won't hold you responsible. |

Indeed, I have learnt in the past couple of days there is a difference of opinion on just what to do, and if to do it. The best avenue is to pass the buck, and let you make your own mind up. We can at least point you in the right direction to read information. There need be no hurry, if your stamps have rust they won't die overnite, and gives you time to make a considered decision. hope this helps. http://www.stamps.org/care/pcpm.htm |

OMG, my stamps can get diseases!!??? are you kidding this is totally unfair. I have a million other things I'm trying to look for as a newbie while I add them to my book.
this is getting hard really hard, first I was just trying to figure out what country that's a huge step for me. then its what year, O wait what type is it, Colors lets not even mention colors I have too Google half of them because I've never heard of any of these colors! perf, non per, coil vertical or horizontal, is it a certain paper thickness, gum? hinges? Mint? are the corners good, is there a tiny dot next to the value, o wait is it the 1907 or the reprint that looks EXACTLY the same in 1917 then refer to 15 different pages listed as end of listing? did you count the perforation, did you measure it? is it an overprint or just in the Back of book for reasons unknown to me? o wait, its a fake... why I got no Idea...
its not fake, ok now try to find its spot in your Scott's book... be sure your right newbie that hinge is probably not coming back off!
Ahhhh, done it stuck in the book... whats that funny brown spot on it O well, slams book closed...
Ed (thats was last night doing Canada)

Rust or foxing is my greatest nemesis as Aust KGV collector.
It breaks my heart at times! |
