Due to the fact that we needed a new computer and my wife decided to do a every 25 year restoration of our stamp and computer room I have done some serious soul searching about my collecting habits..i had to move everything out of my stamp room..livingroom dining room, bedroom hallway are choked with tubs of stamps...i have to be realistic..most are minimum value stamps which I have very little market for even at 3 cents apiece...i have to cut my losses..save my albums, covers and stock books and red boxes of better items and tearfully say farewell to the stuff I have accumulated over 23 years of fairly serious collecting...i will be much more selective in my buying in 2010 also..no more buying what looks like a great deal...i will be spending 2010 deciding what stays and what goes...ahh. judgement day does come...hello to all from the library..should be online with the new Dell in the coming week...phil

I'm about to go through a similar situation with some other hobbies of mine due to a potential upcoming move. Good luck with it...let it be a positive, freeing change and not a negative! That's how I'm looking at mine. I'm trimming things down to what I really love and letting someone else enjoy those extras that have just been sitting in boxes for all these years.

Good luck Philb and Bwbollom!

Some of us have tried to "revise" our stamp accumulating habits year after year after year after year after... The result is 2 rooms, hallway... full of stamps (I'm not kidding when I tell people I'm selling some of my larger stamp items trying to clear out more crawlspace!). My wife is always giving me that "look" -- not the good kind.

I've finally reached a fair compromise with myself. No remodeling and no renovations. All the money I saved by not doing those things, I spend on stamps (and dinner for my wife )

Yep, I've got it all figured out!

I know how it feels! I'm gone through what I was given and have realized that while most of what I was given was "common" it is still stuff I find interesting! However, I've definitely decided my focus is the British Commonwealth and that any WW stamps after 1960 will probably be traded or given away...as these are just not what I am interested in.

This is very sad new for me. I've been amassing stamps for my retirement. Are you telling me that there is no time to sort and enjoy stamps in retirement.

Good luck Phil and try selling some so you can purchase others to replace them.

Good Luck to all in their endeavors to clear out and clean house.

Even with my small collection I find it hard to let go of or catalog unneeded items. I keep thinking maybe one day I will need it. I hope I don't become a hoarder or mass accumalator- then again my income or wife won't allow that. LOL

That's a very easy problem to solve. The solution is called "early retirement". Either that or just don't work a paying job (that's the way I do it!).

Phil, does this mean you don't want more Guatemala volcano stamps? I haven't forgotten you wanted them; it's just that I haven't found them as yet.

Bless you Phil. I empathize with your plight and wish you the best. You will have to make hard choices but, perhaps there will be a positive aspect just having to go through the process. Good luck. I think it was easier to quit smoking two years ago.

Plastic tubs are the enemy n:o one... Seriously. There are much better (and more compact) ways for storage. Instead of giving up I'd definitely give some serious consideraton and a change to alternative storage approaches.

Phil:

I'll help you sort when I get down to NY. I'll probably end-up purchasing a box from you of stuff I pull out of those.

One man's trash is another's treasure!
