Hello,

I'm a new member who (as the name gives away) is focussed on cataloguing and collecting all giraffe-related stamps ever issued. As there appears to be no definitive resource out there, I'm creating one as I go on my website.

I already have a substantial QEII commemorative collection which, thanks to the Royal Mail's subscription service, pretty much takes care of itself, so looked for a new theme and settled on giraffe-related philately.

If anyone has a similar interest, please look at the website (which I imagine can be reached through my profile), and feel free to let me know if there are any that you think I'm missing (so far!).

If any mods read this, I originally posted a reply in this forum : https://goscf.com/t/5968 but it was deleted as it contained a link to my website. I think the link's relevant, and doesn't count as spam (as it's not a commercial website in any way) so would like to reinsert it if at all possible, as it's highly relevant to the discussion at hand.

Welcome to the group. Good luck on your Giraffe safari hunt. I'm not sure if I have any Giraffe stamps as I collect USA.

Thank you - you'll have one (or will when your collection is complete), at least - the 1992 Animals issue contains one stamp featuring a giraffe.

Welcome!

A good source for some giraffe stamps are some of the inexpensive 1930's British Commonwealth stamps from Africa.

Hello-

Are you focusing on stamps in which the giraffe is the star? Or any cameo appearance at all, a la the KGV Jubilee issue of Southern Rhodesia, where the giraffe is standing around out in the frame, with the elephant and the lion, while Victoria Falls gets all the attention?

It'll be nice when your website link goes "live."

Collin

You must love Tanganyika then, I have not seen the pound value of the Giraffe on dealer tables for quite a while. I am sure you must have one.

Apologies for not replying sooner.

Colin - pretty broad...from stamps like Tanganyika's 1922 definitives, a cameo appearance like the Southern Rhodesia ones you mention, to even figurative appearances (like Botswana 1970 Christmas). If it features a giraffe, it's in! I don't think I can post a link yet, but the website is live now - search for Giraffe Stamps Nyassa and I should be the first result...

Harry - I'd say about 30% complete...I'm busy trying to first get a handle on which issues there are out there that fall under the heading of "giraffe stamps", and am up to about 200 and still counting. Pictures on the website are all from my collection (I did originally use scans "found" out there on the web as well, but think that that's a bit dubious from a copyright perspective, so have made my own...if I haven't got a picture then I haven't got the stamps!

Swedish Tiger - yes, a classic issue (although I prefer the Nyassa ones myself, not least because they're cheaper!). I haven't got a set yet, but am looking....! It's not just the 1922 set, as four values from that set were reissued in new colours in 1925 too.

Apologies, have only just seen this.

Presuming you mean the stamp shown below, it's a case of close, but no giraffe, I'm afraid.

It's an okapi (which features with uncanny regularity on the stamps of the Belgian Congo) and which is the giraffe's closest living relative - the giraffe and the okapi are the only creatures in the family Giraffidae.

Good spot, though!

GS

rod-

If GS won't claim 'em, its an open field. It looks like www.okapistamps.com is taken, but www.okapistamps.net is still available...flip ya for it.

In the words of Maxwell Smart..

"I was that...close"

The Okapi of course, didn't come to mind at the time.

Thanks Collin, but not at this time :)

The chap who runs www.girafamania.com.br also has a sideline in okapis, so I think they're already claimed!
