I received a packet of 3-cent Washington Banknote stamps from a stamp buddy in America. They all have "fancy" cancels! Yay!!

How can I tell the difference between a Scott 147, 158, 184, and 207?

David

Hello David.....

The difficult part is determining a #158 from a #184....the only real difference is the paper type.

#158 is on white wove paper........#184 is on soft porous paper....most people rely on the "snap test"....white wove snaps audibly, soft porous does not.

#147-minor shading under leaf, lighter shading around center oval.
#158-dark shading under leaf, dark shading around center oval.
#207-dark shading under leaf, short shading around center oval and a short line under "ts".

Excellent identifiers Tom!

I still have trouble on the paper type though. Have many tell me on the snap test but just could not tell the difference that way. Hearing probably going.

But I can tell by holding to the light on soft porous as it will look like motley newspaper in the light.
