Picked this cover up today, at a show in New Jersey, and my first thought, was seeing all the posts about the terrible mail service, both here and Canada.

Here is a cover from Antarctica to Springfield Mass, that took over 1 year to deliver.

Notice the stamped marking on the lower left.... Postmarked 1/31/34
received at San Francisco 3/25/35

Nice one, bobgggg:

Since both the return and destination addresses are in Springfield, what do you think is the story behind the cover?

It doesn't bear the 50c surcharge for mail sent from the expedition:

Were philatelic covers serviced by the base post in those days? (i.e., could Dr. B have sent down a package with a handful of envelopes for mailing?) That might explain not having to be serviced from a ship?

Guessing...

Hello Bobgggg.....

Wonderful find....missing surcharge, "delayed" hand stamp, and one of my all time favorite stamps.
