In the election of 1868, Ulysses S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax won the Republican Party nomination. This cover is from their 1868 Presidential Election campaign. I'll be on the lookout for a political campaign cover showing Horatio Seymour and Francis Preston Blair, Jr. who won the Democratic Party nomination in 1868. Grant and Colfax went on to win the 1868 election. A map of the Electoral College vote is shown below. Texas, Virginia and Mississippi were not allowed to vote because these states had not been re-admitted to the Union yet. California had just 5 electoral votes, a small number compared to Massachusetts with 12! Does anyone have Ulysses S. Grant related stamps or covers?

Very interesting post. Those old photographs are remarkable, aren't they.
It's also interesting to compare the electoral college map with that of the 2008 election. It's surprising how many of the southern states voted Republican. Of course, memories are long in Georgia :-)
Thanks for sharing, KirkS |

I don't have any covers but I do have a nice selection of used Grant stamps. Not bad for a man who was a failed farmer and once had to sell firewood to support his family. |
