I have a Scott # 327 that has a football shaped cancel with '26' in the cirle. THe date of issue, 1904 and the first APO cancel seem a bit off. If this is an APO where was the PO located?

No idea, but welcome nonetheless. I'd say the over/under on getting a quality answer is thirty minutes.

Hello Notlwonk.....
Welcome to the club...
Could you post a picture ? APO's are American Post Offices outside the US. Usually war time...numbers were used instead of place names for security. |

I don't know either. I thought 26 meant something like 26th Infantry Division. You now have two wrong answers, so I'm sure the third will be the charm. Welcome to SCF, by the way. You'll find a lot of good resources here -- excluding me and Tom, of course KirkS |

Kirk.....
If you don't know the right answer, how do you know I'm wrong ?
APO & FPO numbers designated American Post Offices abroad. |

Sorry Tom.
I meant that to be humorous -- but it didn't come across that way. AND I meant to play off CJD's answer, saying his "don't know" and my "don't know" meant the 3rd reply would be the charm.
I have no idea why/how I got your name in there.
Sincere Apologies, Kirk |

Get a scan of this postmark up. I have an answer bit I need to see the postmark to confirm my findings and give you the proper details.

The numeral in the barrel of a duplex cancel generally denotes the clerk or office number. U.S. Military A.P.O.s do not put the unit number nor name in the postmark nor canceller.
