KGVI Reign - Part 9 - 1948 Silver Wedding Omnibus Issue

On 26 April 1948, The King and The Queen celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary. It was honoured in the Commonwealth with this set of Omnibus stamps:





The lower value of the sets was lithographed and are affordable. The higher value is engraved and is considerably more expensive.

As the high values were higher than normal values (i.e. 10/-, $10, etc.) other than on First Day Covers and those few used on parcels that did not get a heavy postmark, finding nice used examples is difficult. These high values are rarely discounted.

This one crossed my desk on Friday and Ian sold it to me at a good deal. I love my job! The postmark, on this 10/- is neither philatelic nor favour.

In my opinion, this set is the most beautiful of the Omnibus Series of stamps, by Crown Agents, of the Reign.

Gee David, seems like you get all my dumb questions, but I don't understand the phrase "philatelic nor favour"

Can you give me a short explanation?

Philatelic cancel: like the recent post I made of the Texas postmark... not a normal postmark, usually commemorative.

Favour cancel: a cancel that you ask the postal clerk to apply. When you mail me a letter and instead of getting a spray-on cancel, you take the letter to the counter and ask the clerk to cancel the stamps neatly for you, as in asking the clerk to do you a "favour".

The 10/- here has a regular cancel, nothing fancy, and it is obviously not a first day of issue cancel (those were usually favour cancels).

Isn't it great to find something great for a great deal.

I got some really great deals at our stamp club meeting Tuesday. Found some treasures and may even have a line on a decent Penny Black and a Penny Blue for good prices..
