So I'm putting my stamps from Japan in my album. I keep going from one end of the catalogue trying to find the stamp. I find its a prefecture the next stamp this times its a regular issue. Back and forth, back and forth I go. Is there some way to determine if the stamp is a prefecture? If I know that I at least know its in the Z section.

To "quickly" spot prefecture stamps, you don't have to be able to read Japanese, but you do have to be able to recognize font differences. Scott actually does a pretty decent job of illustrating this...  |

The spotting feature I've used, and which is illustrated by k's scan, is whether the middle bar in the first character touches the two vertical sides, or not. Then I don't have to have a picture next to me.

There ya go! Great tip, Collin!
If you look carefully, the left most character is also contained in the right half of the rightmost character. So you can use the same test on the rightmost character. |

I fine it interesting that Scott's decided to treat perfecture issues differently then other local stamps by using "Z" instead of "L". |

Ohayō gozaimasu
I've been sorting Japan stamps issued over the past 10 years seperating into prefectual and regular. After that I still struggle to quickly identify the year so I can find the space in my album for the stap. THey don't seem to change values quickly enough to use that as a range limiter. Are there other quick ID technics? |

Thanks guys. Even with significant Nippon experience, I was never able to short-cut the two types. This thread will also make for good Stamp Club handout material. |
