I found this a few days ago at a flea market in Seattle- though, it looks like its original destination was Wisconsin? Oh well, it's had about a hundred years to make its way this far, by the postmark date! I like fun old objects like this, items that inspire stories and ideas. I can't read the writing on it (never learned to read or write cursive) but I often wonder where it's been between the postmarked time and now.

I don't know what language the writing is. But, I have been to Grants Tomb. It's VERY impressive. Went with the Scouts and were allowed into the lower level as well. I would recommend it if you need to kill an hour or 2 in upper Manhattan. I wounder why a NYC postcard was mailed in Milwaukee, WI? |

Milwaukee was, and to a certain degree still is, very ethnic, so it could be anything. It's a good place to go for sausages and beer. It is also about 1,000 miles from New York, so who knows what that story is...
Tens of thousands of immigrants would have passed through New York on their way to settling in Milwaukee at the beginning of the last century, but that's only a guess.

Gen./Pres. U.S. Grant. That is an old joke going back to the building of the tomb. It was built with private funds and they ran out of money. As a result, He was interred under a tent that was located behind the unfinished tomb. When the building was finally finished he was placed inside along with his wife. That is where the joke comes from. |

Glad you included Mrs. Grant. Since the answer to the question is both the Prez and Mrs. Grant |

Thanks all for the information! I'll bounce the card off a few people I know who are better with cursive handwriting and see if I can't at least type up what it says, and determine the language that way. |

I think the guess of Finnish could be right on the money, since Googling the recipient's last name of Mantyoja brings up lots of Finnish hits.
Let us know.
