That is cool lenabobby! It is part of the cancel. I like US flags and have a few flag cancels on some stamps/covers.
Thanks for posting!

Here is a 10c Jefferson large banknote issue on an 1873 cover addressed to the Very Reverend Dr. Chatard,
Rector, American College, Rome, Italy.

It appears to have been mailed on April 17 from Springfield Mass, where the stamp was tied to the cover with
a split cork fancy cancel. Upon arrival in New York on April 18th, it received a red PAID ALL transit marking.

From the backstamps we can see that it passed through Verona, Italy on May 2nd.

Why it went through Verona is somewhat puzzling; perhaps the ship it was on docked at Venice
and the letter was sent overland through Verona to Rome. Finally it arrived in Rome on May 3rd
(3 Maggio 73).

Am assuming this is 19th century, though neither the postmark nor the receiving stamp give a year. I like the cancel. Hope it's fancy enough! I guess it would be a barred circle 11, or does it have a more accepted name?
