Yay, more questions.
First, don't blame me for the state of the envelope. I got them that way.
I would like to find out when/where these two were issued and thought I'd ask here. Googling the names has gotten me nowhere. chateaudun "val du loir" stamp cancel results in zero hits!
Has anyone seen these before, or knows the story behind them?

Thanks very much!

G'day Andere
They are French "slogan" cancels, very pretty.
If a mark appears on an envelope, somebody, somewhere will collect it.
I do not collect them, I just don't throw anything out.

Check out the boy holding Marianne,
shades of "Alas poor Yorrick...."

When Googling, less is usually more. I googled "Chateaudun val de loir" and got 64,000+ hits

Apparently, it's a very nice chateaux.

May I please pose a friendly question here?

I notice that some of the slogan canellations scanned in this thread are w/o the dater hib. If you want to keep them for the sake of completeness, why not keep the dater hub portion, because some particular slogan cancels are used from several different cities / towns? Since the 'fancy' portion of the cancellation is shown, you will not know what town / city it is from.

Then again, for the sake of it being a hobby, you keep it any way you want <G>.

Just a suggestion

Cheers

Bujutsu

Entirely agree, Bujutsu, Sage advice to all.
Unfortunately in this case, I was the recipient of another collectors parameters, which included lopping the date section.
So I guess for any newbies collecting slogans,
the degree of importance value for philately
1. keep the entire cover
2. if adopting a "cut square", include all of the machine marking
including date, and if possible the senders envelope printing.

I am of the "keep the entire cover" mentality. Sure, storage is an issue, but I can live with that.

I have about a hundred GB slogans from the 60's all on cover.

I inherited these, so I'm guessing the previous collector tore them that way. I have a bunch of torn envelope corners, some of which the tears damage the stamp itself. I can understand on some of them- My mom collected most of these as a kid or while traveling in college, where time/space was of less importance than now- but others I really wish were whole. I'm keeping all remaining envelopes whole now.

And thanks, Rod222 for the information! I'll hunt around on line with new search words and see if I can't narrow down the time/location of these a bit.

Aha! the collector then becomes the Philatelist
Research is half the fun I reckon.

Here is a page from 1980 which discusses these slogans in part,
and indicates the essential requirement for at least a "cut square"
albeit these seem to have a date under them, unless that is the collectors addition.

Poor scan due to forum constraints
