What is your Favorite ebay find? Here is mine:

The cover itself is interesting in that it is an example of rare commercial usage of civil censorship in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (now Kiribati and Tuvalu) during World War II.

What blew me away when I saw the cover was the addressee.

Penitala Teo (later sir Fiatau Penitala Teo) was the first Ellice Islander to become a district officer in the colony, and later the first to become district commissioner. After the Ellice Islands became the independent nation of Tuvalu in 1978, he was appointed as Governor General.

To top all of this off, Penitala Teo was my wife's grandfather! You can image how it was a MUST that I acquire this cover. I fortunately was able to get this family heirloom for less than $100 last year.

What an exciting find for you.
Treat it well , it will most surely remain in your family for vast generations.
Nice story to accompany it as well.

Here is some gossip on the bird on your cover

THE FRIGATE BIRD POST

Some sixty years ago, tame Frigate birds were employed on the Ellice Islands in much
the same manner as carrier pigeons are used. The natives were encouraged to take the
young birds without injuring them. Comfortable sheltered perches were then erected
near the beach, the young birds were tied to these by the leg, and fed until they were
very tame.

When then let loose, the birds would go to sea for food and return to their perches
when fed and satisfied with flying. It was noticed that they would invariably come
back at once on the approach of a storm. The Frigate bird post, as it might be called,
was started by the missionaries, who sent and received letters rolled up in a quill that
was attached to the bird.

@rod22: Very interesting info on the Ellice Islands frigate birds! Can you imagine the value of a "flown" cover!

@nr-notrare: Great find! This is one area where the internet has greatly benefited collectors. These probably would never have been found otherwise.

I found this superb item for peanuts. I can't say how much, as I'm re-selling it on ebay!

It's the rare West Berlin Freedom Bell "Clapper to Left" set from 1951. The stamp was subsequently
re-engraved with the clapper in the centre, then to the right. This is the scarce set on a Motor
Exhibition cover. I've never seen the set on cover before

Scott are behind on value for these at around $165, Michel has them at €200 and SG has them at £180

This was in some kiloware I got from Great Britain on ebay years ago. I've never known who the pretty lady is on the Picture Postage stamp but have always imagined she was in some branch of the military that had to do with aviation. Thus (perhaps) the sender's choice of using the two stamps about the Snowbirds flying team.

The rate to Great Britain (international mail) in 2006 was $1.49, the domestic rate (that the Picture Postage would have been rated at) was $0.51. So the envelope was overpaid by 3 cents.

It is really neat that a personal label kind of stamp can be used officially to add meaning to or enhance the story behind the officially issued stamps. Or that the officially issued stamps can do the same for the personal stamp. It adds to the value of the envelope.

Or part of the envelope!
