I'll start this. Everyone else please add to it.

1. ALWAYS use stamp tongs, especially when handling mint stamps.
1a. ALWAYS wash your hands with soap and water when handling mint or valuable stamps in case you forget #1 above. The hamburger grease or Cheetos dust on your fingers won't do your stamps any good.

2. Don't smoke around your stamps. This includes pipes and cigars.
3. Set your beverage on a surface below the level of your desk. This greatly reduces the chance of a spill morphing from an inconvenience into a disaster.

4. Please, always use a "slip cover" for your albums, dust is the major contributor to rust and other nasties in your album, and stamps.
This cannot be stressed enough.

Where do you get slip covers? I know that some albums have them as a matter of course (Davo, some Stanley Gibbons, etc.), but a lot do not (Harris, White Ace)...and I've got a few that don't.

Not much help here WpgLwr,
I found them hard to source, a local collector gets his made, and I pay
around AUD $14 each IIRC.

Same problem here with slip covers. I keep those albums [if poss] that don't have slip covers in the cabinet. I hope the doors are closed good !

Laswabbie made me chuckle with one of his comments.

7. Never throw any stamps away,no matter how mundane they may appear to you. Even the ripped and torn, they may be of interest to those for ID of gum, paper, postmarks, aux markings, watermarks or whatever.
If you have to dispose of them throw them in a shoebox and sell as a box lot at auction, or take to your local charity Red Cross etc.
Someone, somewhere will use them.

Slipcovers cost almost as much as a good album.

I don't use them, and try to keep a dust-free house.
