My first philatelic passion is my KGVI Collection... next installment appears later to-day or tomorrow.

My other passion is the U.S. Americana Series (1975-1983).

For my collection of covers showing various rates... check out this "bag tag" complete with string. (Often the string gets tossed!)









The red mark across the back is the "Cleared By Canada Customs" marking.

Nice piece of postal history David. On the first image it looks like the stamps were cancelled with the ball of string!

Actually, it's a standard roller cancel of the period.

Any thoughts on what the "M" stands for?

Interesting that the tag has the French for from and to in parentheses, but no other French for the other instructions.

Note in the receiver's address space it says City, Province and Postal Code. Those are Canadian terms. I expect this tag was made for service to Canada.

I just picked up this cover today. Total postage $4.44. Of course, the 40¢ is just for the airmail postage. I rarely if ever see high-value Americana stamps on cover. This is one of my few covers from Puerto Rico. I am guessing the registered rate was $4.04.

One question ... in the Catalogue appear this stamps included in the Americana.
is this information correct?

dvaldemoro: Technically, these stamps were not considered part of the Americana series, even though 1623 was issued in booklet panes containing one 1590 stamp (9 cent capitol dome) and seven 1623. Note that 1590 most certainly is a member of the Americana series.
The 1622 design appears in three different issues (1622, 1622C, 1625). 1622 is perf 11x10.75, 1622C is perf 11.25 & 1625 is a perf 10 coil.
The 1623 design appears in two different issues (1623, 1623B). 1623 is perf 11x10.5 while 1623B is perf 10x9.75. Note that 1590 & 1590B are the capitol dome stamps included in booklet panes with 1623 & 1623B respectively (same perf measurements). Within a year after the issuance of the booklets, one dollar panes of 1623B/1590B were selling for as much as $100 or more. The highest asking price that I recall was $125. When the dust finally settled & the speculators had made their haul, the selling price eventually came down to around $10.
