BUmping this up Cuz Im Cataloging this era. Scott 1591 the Capitol Dome 9c is shown in my album to have a grey paper and white paper varieties. My question is; Held side by side, is the paper difference obvious? All of my copies seem to be either greyish or greenish paper. Cant recall ever seeing a white paper variety of this stamp. |

I'm picking this off the top of my head. I don't have any references available right now. I think the white paper variety is from a booklet. The difference with the gray paper variety is pretty obvious--you'll know you have a white paper variety.
Hope this helps.

I suspect the album is referring to the stamp (1591) from a traditional pane (grey paper) versus the booklet pane varieties (1590 and/or 1590A), the latter is shown below: |

Makes sense, I've seen this pair before, but my album doesn't show it that way, just in singles. I'll have to add the pair to the page. Thanks! |

There were actually 4 different stamps depicting the 9-cent capitol dome. 1591 (pane) & 1616 (coil) are the ones with a gray background. 1590 (perf 11x10.5) & 1590A (perf 10x9.75) are from booklets and have a white background. 1590 & 1590A can be found paired with 1623 & 1623B. Each booklet pane had one 9-cent stamp & 7 13-cent stamps. |

Ok, another query; I have a 1598 with perfs at 11.2 x 11.2, Now my catalog Has 1596 at 11.2 but the McHenry flag is is to be 11x10.5, and doesn't show 11x11. My Album Shows a spot for Perf 11, and 11x10.5 Maybe its a 1597? |

Let's take it further: According to my Scott's catalog, 1598 was issued only in booklets and all stamps have one or two straight edges. The stamp you show has perfs on all edges. I suspect what you have is actually a 1597. The Scott catalogue doesn't state what the perfs are on the 1597, so I presume that the 11.2 carries from the 1596. However, my Brookman catalogue says the 1597 has 11 perf. |

Remember, when no confusion can arise, Scott tends to round off perf measurements. Perhaps Brookman does a similar thing. So 11.2 can become 11. Although I read my Scott the same as Alan B ... the 11.2 from 1596 applies to 1597 as well. Since Durland's perf measurements tend to be more precise, I checked my 2008 catalog. Only to discover that Durland neglected to give perf measurements for this issue. |

My 2008 Scott Specialized says 1597 is a 10x10, with no other perf varieties. Im gonna go with the 1597 identification. Thanks again |

I think if you look a little closer you'll find that your Scott catalogue's reference to "10x10" is actually referring to the number of stamps in a pane as in "Plates of 460 subjects (20x23) in panes of 100".

Wow, I remember all of those. My mom cut them off of her envelopes for me when I was a kid. |
