It should be Dutch. My NVPH is not recent enough to list it.
NOTE TO SELF: must spend more money on catalogs... |

Yeah, I was about to ask you for a bigger scan because I cannot read the lettering. However, right now, both pics look the same size. |

Your NVPH is 2 years newer than mine!
TNT Post has operations in numerous areas in Europe. If the writing is French, then it could very well be a private local post issue.
This is outta my league, so I defer to others... |

Looks like the former Dutch PTT..
It's 1989, PTT Post, the Dutch state-owned postal company, is privatized. During the following years the company is split up in different parts responsible for postal deliveries, telegraph and telephones. The different parts are made independent and the stocks are sold on the market. The post is not the only publicly owned or controlled company that is privatized and sold off. The Dutch railways, the former state-owned mines – now a chemicals company – and public services follow. Neoliberalism and all it entails has become the dominant way of thought.
Twenty years after the privatization of PTT, now named TNT Post, the bosses are on a collision course with the employees and trade-unions. Either the employees accept a 17.5 percent cutback in wages or 11.000 people will be fired. The postal workers refuse to accept this and demand a 1.5 percent wage increase.

After misreading the letter twice in Dean's thread, I figured I should read the posts more carefully. But then... Quote: I showed my wife but they thought... k |

Quote: Looks like the former Dutch PTT. I thought we had discussed the background in a thread last year, but maybe I was mistaken and thinking of another stamp forum. |

OK, I wasn't mistaken... posted by Jan-Simon (of The Netherlands). The details are for another stamp, I'm quoting for the eye-witness corporate history provided: Quote: Hi all, let's see... a lot of things have been said already. Most statements are correct but others are not entirely correct. The confusion is understandable as there have been many namechanges in the past 20 years. Until the 1980s we had one state owned company for Post, Telephone and Telegraphs: PTT. It was split into two companies: PTT Post and Koninklijke PTT Nederland (KPN). The latter was the telephone part of PTT and first was 100% owner of PTT Post. Later both companies became private and in the 1990s PTT Post bought the originally Australian company TNT. The name of the new company became TPG - TNT Post Group. The Dutch postal service was then renamed TPG Post. A couple of years later TPG became TNT and TPG Post was renamed once more to TNT Post, which is their current name. So TPG does not own TNT Post, it cannot as it does not exist anymore. TNT which is the successor of TPG is the owner of TNT Post.
Royal Dutch is the name commonly used for the Dutch part (60%) of Royal Dutch/Shell ("Shell oil") but it can also apply to Royal Dutch Mail, which is in fact TNT Post. Yes, I said it was complicated.
Now for the shown stamps: they are special stamps issued for use by companies only. Sometimes these companies want to make their massmailings look more personal, more than just a "Port Betaald" cancel or ATM label and they can use these stamps / labels to do so. They are sold by TNT Post to these companies for special reduced prices and as they are almost always used on massmailings they are machine-applied and the cut perforations as shown on the scan by Phil are common. The philatelic service sells them as well (they sell everything if necessary) in strips like on the scan by khj. They cannot be used by private consumers. the NvPH catalogue has a listing of them, if my memory serves me well.
Jan-Simon It's been awhile since I've seen a post from Jan-Simon, but his posts still carry good info! Hope he drops in again soon! k |
