I have a problem.
Don't laugh, I know I have many problems !

I need your opinions on the subject of posting Blogs and/or discussion subjects here [mostly] and elsewhere.

I will give an example:

I come to SCF one nice sunny day and send a link to a Blog I wrote at another place. I call it a Blog or discussion, sign my name and I'm gone.
All you see is the Blog/discussion title; the link to the 'other' place; and my signature [with some unfunny wisecrack!].

I call this a Blog.
I then expect you to go to the 'other' place and come back here and say "Well done Bus, the blog was great" !!

Is this acceptable to you ??
It is not to me.
I have been having heated discussions tonite both on and off screen.

I would love your opinions.

Thanks
Londonbus1....it's too late for wisecracks !

I don't really have an opinion either way, other than to say it depends on the guidelines set up by the board administrators, or if no guidelines, what the traditional tendency/habits of the board have been in the past. I know some boards that really frown upon people posting links inviting people to visit other boards or sales sites. I've seen other boards where nearly anything goes -- and literally anything gets posted (don't stay at those boards very long).

I typically will hang around a board a few weeks or months, even after the initial hello post, just to see/read and get a feel for the flavor of the board.

Just my thoughts, didn't really answer your question with my opinion.

I think that if it is philatelic in nature and could be helpful or entertaining it could not hurt to post a link, if allowed by the forums rules. Another thing to consider would be to post the link on your profile page under your favorite links. On this forum we all seem to share our knowledge, web links, and quips. If it interests me that is great, if not that is fine as well. As long as it is not SPAM.

I tend to go along with stamperdude. As long as it is relative.

I don't see a problem linking to another site/blog as long as it is related to what we do here Michael. I don't personally visit other discussion sites but do look on a couple of blogs. I even linked to one we all know, authored by one of our family members.

Well Londonbus1, the internet is all about links, and if someone wants to link a good site or story, why note do so to the original post, better than cut & paste.

I wasn't going to reply, but hang the expense
On a newsgroup some time ago, an Israeli collector
would pop on every month and leave his blog link, with updates on stamps of Israel.
All well and good.
Several times I responded by asking a question about his stamps
yet never once had a reply.
I then felt he was just using the NG as an advertising medium.
It did not endear me to the practice.
So I kinda side with you LB.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I think there may have been some confusion about my first post.

I am talking about coming to the forum, STARTING up a NEW topic, and then posting an outside link to your Blog or discussion.Nothing else in the post, just the link. In other words, the subject matter can be found at the link, not at SCF !

Rod, thanks for your reply. This is the kind of thing I am talking about and I also know an Israeli collector who does this ! [Maybe one and the same].
But your reply was most interesting for me because of your initial few words.
You wrote "I wasn't going to reply". Last night on the other group, only the poster gained support from 2 or 3 others. However, they did not say I was wrong. No one came out in support of my views publicly, like Rod did, but privately they wrote to me and agreed , more or less, with what I had said !
Why ?
Why not write it publicly?
Are they ashamed?
Are they afraid to speak their minds?
I have asked a couple and am awaiting replies.

I have always found this subject interesting, sometimes annoying too.
I am not against using links to information websites, catalogues, shops, ebay etc etc.
But it seems most absurd to me that someone can post a link to their private site on another forum, and then call that link a Blog !!
It is not.
In all or most forums there is a Links section. Links to personal Blogs should be left there along with other informative websites.
I believe this is how it should be done. Is the 'nice' way.

If one joins a forum, any forum, be prepared to read and write. That is what they are for.
But to join Groups/forums as a means of 'advertising' one's personal Blogs is more than a little cheeky. When that blogger does nothing else, then it is extremely selfish.
I belong to many groups, some do not allow it at all, others in moderation or with permission. Others it is only via the links section.
What is the norm here at SCF ??

I have asked the same question at the group where the discussion took place yesterday and have not had a reply from any of the moderators as yet.
Maybe I have opened up a can of worms !?????

Londonbus1......Yuck, and I'm eating breakfast too !

I don't let it bother me. It's really up to the board adminstrators. Obviously, if it gets out of hand, I pack my keyboard and head elsewhere.

I would consider it discourteous. Kind of like a sales call during dinner. If it was a friend calling during dinner, I don't mind.

So you have a good point. One would think they would at least try to get a little active and get to know the board participants.

This is one of the reasons why I really like the 50 post buy/sell/trade rule on this board.

Well said Khj,
I like this forum, it is polite and harmonious and I like
the self depecating humour, it makes for an easy place to abide.
I hadn't realised the significance of the 50 post rule before.

Maybe a rule like the 50 post one here would go a long way to solving the problem.
I will suggest it.

I agree. I have no issue with a 50 post rule. I joined recently. If you're a genuine collector/philatelist, 50 posts flies by in no time.
