I know Australian stamps as a whole but only KGVs with a bit of depth. Kangaroos & map of Australia could be explained but I do not know enough. KGVI but I do not know enough. Australian decimal ~ but I do not know them in depth.

All my knowledge is in KGV stamps. I look in wonder as many of you know something of stamps from all over the world & I am in awe.

Can anybody do an in depth on a stamp issue from anywhere? It really would fit in on this forum. Have a go! So what if it takes a year. You have all my encouragement & support. KGV.

Hi KG V

The best way I can try to answer your question is by saying this: I think most issues can be studied in depth but, those are usually (key word 'usually') stamps from a definitive series such as your KG V issues.

As a Canadian, I know that collectors here do an in-depth study of the "Admiral" stamps, the 1967 "Centennial" issues and many of the pictorial definitive sets. The same can be said for most countries definitive issues.

I choose the word' definitives' simply becasue so many stamps were issued from original plates which in time, had to be either repaired or replaced and, by doing so, many varieties were created.

I am sure that there will be other collectors in here that can offer their insights as well.

Thanks for the reply. My question is not an easy one to answer. Your explanation on long running definitives from a country defines the original question very well. I hope it inspires someone.

There have to be some people that have been drawn to a stamp issue & taken that extra step in trying to collect & understand the changes that have taken place a in a long running definitive issue. It certainly teaches the collector more about the stamps they love. Thanks again. KGV

Hi Again KGV

What I never thought of while posting my message yesterday was about a collector friend I personally know. He is Dutch and I am Canadian and we both have the same last name but are not related. Anyway, he once showed me his collection of his Queen Wilhelmina defintives and had totally 're-contructed' a sheet of one of the values (forget the value offhand) and had all the possible constant varieties listed. That is what I call devotion <G>.

Whatever attracted him, I cannot say, but on the other hand, once I had seen this collection, I could well understand the need to complete. I would suppose too that one has to consider the enormity of the challenge and then tackle it. The harder the challenge, the better some people like it.

Another plus side of definitives is that they are usually cheaper than commemoratives etc and can be easily procured and studied in depth. Let's face it, we all have definitives lol
