Recently, I bid on and got a Scott number 595 on ebay. The price was low and I knew going in there was a chance it was incorrectly identified.

When I got the stamp, I was unable to confirm or deny the stamp was indeed correctly identified.

I emailed the seller and told him that I would not leave any negative feedback, since I was just as responsible as he was in having difficulty in being able to positively identify the stamp

I haven't heard back from the seller and am trying to decide on a second communication.

This certainly comes under the heading of caveat emptor. I doesn't pay to try for a bargain on a rather pricey stamp.

I think it's often worth a punt, and I've won a few lovely bargains over the years.

Can you post a pic of this one?

I'm impressed Jubilee, you speak two languages, Gibbons and Scott.

jubilee, I will try, but as I do not have a scanner, it will have to be a photo taken with a digital camera.

In terms of a very nice purchase is Scott 426 (I think. any way it is the three cent in this series of Washington/Franklins). It is a plate number block of 4 of the pink back variety. It is just lovely. Couldn't be happier.

If the listing is still in the ebay system, the picture might be available there...just a thought.

I'm with jubilee on this one...certainly I've taken a few chances that haven't panned out, but when I've taken a flyer I've been lucky more often than I haven't. At least, that's how I remember it...maybe I don't dwell on the others?

post a pic rohumpy, surely with a dozen eyes looking at it, it should be identifiable. I hope

hmmm, I wrote a reply, but it did not appear. Nic, I am not sure a photo will help. Identification depends on a very precise measurement of the dimensions of the design. The stamp is rotary press coil waste (from the same sheets as 599) The perforation is 11, so the stamp it can be confused with is the original 2 cent perf 11 flat plate printing.

The best way I have come across is to mutilate a perf 11 flat plate 2 cent or the coil 599 by cutting the corners off so that the two stamps can be directly compared.
