I'm glad I have found this website and forum. I hope to join in some of the discussions when I have time. I'm sure to ask questions here too as I find stuff all the time that is odd and sends me to the Internet to do research. I live out by the Vermont border here in New York, but originally from Maryland. By profession I'm a field archaeologist, but work has been slow due to the economy.
I've been collecting stamps and cover since the mid-1970's when I was a kid and never really stopped. I use to be a member of the Bowie Stamp Club in Maryland before I moved. I collect/collected stamps of the U.S., Canada, Australia and states, Great Britain, Ireland, France and Switzerland. I'm starting to focus more now on postal history and picture postcards. When I have time I am also a stamp dealer on
ebay as wbattles for over 10 years now and have recently joined Delcampe too.
Outside of philately, I enjoy exploring the local area with my wife, history, animals, working outside in the yard, fixing my old house (there's always something), movies, playing a video game or putzing on the computer.
Recent "cool" finds:
1. On a 1920's Commemorative aviation cover I found the name Burt Williams Plain Dealer. I first thought the guy didn't know how to spell, but wife who is from the mid-west told me that it was a newspaper. I researched the name and found out he was a founder and first National Secretary of the National Press Photographers Association.
2. Came across a letter (no cover sadly), but the letter from 1857 is a transcription of a few 1801 letters from Elijah Wadsworth of Ohio and the Postmaster General about establishing post offices in the "Western Reserve" of Ohio.
