I have some WWII Stamps that have "Ukraine" stamped on them and some that have "Osterreich" stamped on them in black, is this a canceled stamp or does it have some other significance?

The top stamp is a German Occupation of Russia issue for Ukraine.
1941.

The lower stamp was issued in the Russian Zone of Occupation in 1945, an Allied Occupation stamp at the end of the War. Listed in Gibbons under Austria. [Various overprints/surcharges]

Someone will chip in with Scott numbers.

Hope it helps a bit !

Hi All

Some collectors do speciailizing in the 'obliterated' Hitler head stamps only and can form quite an intersting collection from them.

The main thing one has to worry about with these obliterated heads are forgeries which are quite plentiful.

Yahoo has a Third Reich Study Group which delves into these as well as other stamps and postal history from this era.

To become a member, you might want to email them for registration particulars at THIRD_REICH_STAMPS@yahoogroups.com

I had been a member of that Yahoo group for some time. A lot of attitudes involved. At least, when I was a member.

Like you RevStampMaN, I have been a member of that group for a number of years now. True, there are many and varied opinions and AI guess in some of the cases, it is up to the individual to draw their own conclusions.

Another group I belong to is the Mulready Group. Although I am not that active in it, I must say that there are so many opinions in there regarding colours of MC etc and, cancellation identifications. Having said all this, I must say that in both groups, their data bases are truly a wealth of information.

I sure enjoy this forum

Happy collecting

Regarding overprints, surcharges and colonies / occupied territories sometimes you need to persevere when you go through Scott's looking for them, Sometimes they are under the "parent" country and in "proper" order. But often they are listed at the back of the country section, or perhaps even under the name of the using territory.
