I just had to share this one, because, well, I'm a proud Dad.

This is my son, Jacob. He's 6 years old and he's been collecting now for about 2 years, when I gave him a few stamps with some trains and a small stock book. He filled up his stockbook this past week by picking stuff out of my duplicates box, so now he's asking me for a bigger stockbook. My mission this week is to clear one of my larger stockbooks so he can have room for more stamps.

He's a cub scout, and while they don't have the stamp collecting merit badge like the boy scouts, he can get an activity bead for showing a collection of some kind. So, at the next Den meeting he will present his collection and get his bead. From there, he can do a little organizing and get a metal belt loop thingy for his uniform, so we'll work on that next.

Btw, if there are any other single Dad's out there, this is a fantastic way to spend quality father/son time on those weekends when it's raining and you're not totally swamped with homework that needs to be done.

I started collecting as a 7 year old. My mother used to buy those "mission mixture" lots and we'd spend hours at the kitchen table sorting them. One side benefit from that was it gave me a decided advantage in school because I knew the world's countries - and some of their geography and history - better than most of my school chums.

Rod,
Thanks for the offer, but I don't have 50 posts on here yet, so I can't send an email... that's very nice of you, though.

That is awesome! I have been giving my son stamps when he requests them for the past 2 years, he's currently 3.5. In fact, he came home with more stamps than me at the last Stamp Show we attended. I myself started collecting around the age of 8.

I started collecting when I was 8, too. I was pretty happy when he decided he wanted to collect with me at age 4!

I like you am a single dad and am in the exact same situation. Hats off to you my friend. Sure is fun, and he asks me all the time if we can do some "Stamping"! Funny because he was hooked (though was gonna need to surgically remove controller from his hand) on video games.

Allen, that is a great picture, I have a 10 year old grandson that has started collecting in an old album I gave him. I also started collecting about the age of 6 by being given stamps that my grandmother had handed down to my mother and then my mother gave them to me.It stuck and I have collected ever since. Thanks again for the picture, That is a lot of what it is all about. Dean

Allen,

I second Rod's offer - unless your son's collection is targeted specifically at one country or theme (in which case let me know), if you drop me an email when you hit 50 posts I'll send a set of 1901 Nyassa stamps (giraffes and camels) his way.

Thanks Giraffe and Rod, you guys are very kind!

Or maybe you just want me to give up my stockbook that much quicker?

Allen,

No problem. They'll be on their way later in the week (our village post office's hours are neither "regular" nor "long"!).

Kind regards,

GS
