This cover is from the New Jersey Attorney General's Office to a U.S. Senator. Seems it would be a senator from New Jersey, but I can't make out the name and what I have tried to google hasn't worked. The stamp looks like Scott 156 as best I can tell with an 8X loupe. Though the dash of color appears to be blue and not from the cancellation, it's not quite as distinct as that shown in the catalog. The postmark isn't much for dating purposes. Does anyone have an idea of what this 1870's Senator's name might be?

Thanks. Rawson looks good and shows up on google, just not in the senate that long ago. Possibly no one of any consequence to make google, today. |

Well thanks, everyone. Post it here and philatelic mysteries are solved in record time! I was searching on "Ranson." That "n" at the end of his name looked like one of the clearest letters there. But it was an "m." |
