Spock,
IS that an expensive set? That one with the train would fit right into my trains collection. I will have to see if I can't pick one of those up somewhere...

Allen,

if you look at it from a indian perspective most british india is expensive other than the 1946 sets. but in mnh almost everthing is expensive this is about 16 pounds in the new catalog and with the right watermark is 28 pounds used. I will have to check my stamps for watermarks. it pays to have more than one set :)

The stamp is on its way on the Flying Kangaroo

That was the first rail stamp for India
and valued at GBP 4 in 1986

Here are all the rail stamps of India till 1977
and what you will find in the Stanley Gibbons
"Collect Railways on Stamps"
(Howard Burkhalter New York)

Rod, I just want to say you are AWESOME! I've been looking for a book just like that, so I googled the title and found it for 3 bucks on Barnes and Noble.

spock,

Are "annas" equal to American cents? In my house one "Ana" equals one wife.

Ray,

not really they are not a decimal system they realte more closely tot he old britiah system of pence shilling pounds

3 pies make a paisa
4 paisa make a anna
16 annas make a rupee
15 rupees make a mohur

so all the stamps that are 15 rupees or more are mohur stamps thats why they have people jumping up and down for them. an equivalent coin costs about 3k so the poor fools who invested in stamps were left with lil money and lots of maintainence

And about the time of that Train stamp, 1 Anna was worth about 1 British penny.

i dont know that but the evil empire has one soverign fixed as one mohur 15 rupees a way to rip india off. they had also forced india on the silver standard and stayed on the gold one during vickys time. what I most pissed off about is that those morons had no quality controls for coins from 1835 to 1878 or so and buying varieites makes me broke. and let me not get started ont he stamp ahades a thing that is true for modern india also

if you keep buying souv sheets from me sooner or later you will get different colors of the same sheet makes you puke in the stomach
