Ww Collector From Asheville

Greetings! My current assignment has made it impossible to attend any local stamp club meetings here in Asheville, North Carolina so I thought I would join an "on line" club. I am a world wide collector adding to my grand-father's and father's collections started in Estonia in the 1920's and which survived somewhat the bombing raids of Kassel, Germany during World War II.

Of Baltic German and Russian heritage, I am interested in the stamps from the Baltic region but also the stamps of countries where my firm had set up foreign subsidiaries. I used to bug my fellow financial controllers in these countries to send me what they could from their mail rooms. That was before metered mail became the norm, of course.

Look forward to reading posts and in time posting having the usual love for stamps, history and foreign languages (German, Russian and Estonian).

Welcome aboard. I think you should have a rewarding experience with this group and it sounds like you'll bring a good bit to the table. I'm in the accumulation phase of Russian collection myself and I'm anxious to see where it goes.

I appreciate the warm reception. Feel free to ask for any translations of German, Russian or Estonian items although the online translators due a good enough job to get the jist of any site or wiki entry.

My world wide collection is housed in the Minkus Supreme Global which is truly world wide until 1965/66 but more targeted/abridged afterwards through 1999 to what one would consider the more popular countries. The only specialty albums I use is a Davo for Estonia and the Scott for the USA.

Like everyone else in the WW arena desperately trying to get mounted what I already own and want lists organized before I obtain a second or third copy of something I already own.

I'd sure like to see some pictures of your Russian collection....do you collect covers ?

Not to worry Ray..we know the feeling people who continue to collect worldwide when they should have been weaned years before are a strange lot !!

Only Estonian covers as well as those during the Soviet period. I maintain an FDC collection of modern Estonian covers and look forward to seeing them every year as I enjoy the artistry.

I know from my time in Eastern Europe as an employee of my company that Soviet space and artic exploration covers were highly prized. My Russian collection is that of a general collector with few rarities.

I noticed you are from Canada, one of the first with personalized stamps. I have not got into the personalized stamps of Estonia, sticking to FDC covers of the normal stamp program through the years. I will have to take a look myself. I have not travelled there since 2004 but will be there next year when Tallinn becomes the cultural capital. Local flea markets there will no doubt have them. I will keep my eye open for something interesting.
