Hi All,
Does anyone have a Pitcairn Islands $1 definitive 1977. Cylinder block 1A 1A 1A 1A 1A
I have a block of 4 with marked flaws behind the left and right shoulders of the Duke. This is the only 1A(black) cylinder I have seen.
I am surmising that the flaws were noted and corrected pretty quickly as I have a block on which the 1A black cylinder was replaced with 2A. There is no trace of any flaw on that block nor on the other cylinders I have seen -
1B 1B 1B 1B 1B and 1D 1D 1D 1D 1D
If anyone has a similar 1A block I would be pleased to hear from them with their comments.
Best regards Ron.

Welcome Ron, hope you enjoy your stay. I checked my collection, sorry only a Walsall imprint attached to the Duke. I checked Bill Hornadge's catalogue which finishes 1975-1976 For readers, I presume this to be item: and perhaps, if you havn't seen it, a little novelty, fibre mail: |

Ron:
Welcome to the forum.
I collect King George VI reign of our British Commonwealth, so by default, I guess I am a Pitcairn Islands collector. I really like that stamp of the Duke of Edinburgh. I've often considered doing a topical collection of him.

There was an article in the 70's in Australian Stamp News, David, highlighting the fact there were very few issues with regard Prince Philip. There have been a number since then, IIRC from the Pacific area, but, I reckon you may be pressed to fill more than a couple of pages.

It'd be a one frame exhibit with some nice FDC's and commercial covers ;-)
Don't forget that he would appear on the Silver Jubilee series, wedding anniversaries, golden jubilee etc |

Hello All, For some reason the pictures appeared without my reply so here it is to go with the illustrations. Thanks for the input on my query. As a follow up here are pictures of the complete plate block and the stamp showing the marks which appear on the top left stamp of the block.
They show as a big black mark just above the Dukes left shoulder and to his right what looks like a white bird in flight and another black mark just above that.
I have tried other sources with this question but have had no success so far.
Thanks Rod for the illustration and for the one from your collection - maybe I should take a leaf from your book.
Puzzler - are you thinking of it? They have some very attractive stamps...
David - that idea of a Thematic on the Duke sounds interesting and I should think would make a very nice, challenging collection.
As a matter of interest, Eunice collects Australia's "Queens Birthday" stamps which is very colourful.
Regards to all
Ron.

A thematic on the Duke would be interesting, not least to someone on Tanna in Vanuatu where, if I recall correctly, he is worshipped as a god as a result of a cargo cult called the Prince Philip Movement! |

Quote: I checked Bill Hornadge's catalogue which finishes 1975-1976 Rod, you might be interested to know there's a revised edition of that catalogue, dated 1981. And, as it happens, the stamp under discussion is on the cover. My slightly tatty copy of the catalogue is shown. There's no mention of this flaw being a constant variety, though. There is a listed variety for the 20c value in this set, the "Grating Coconut & Bananas" issue - there's a scratch found below the word "COCONUT" on the stamp from row 4 column 2 on plates 1A and 1C. Ryan, Is there any catalogue you don't have ? You are amazing. I had no idea there was a revised edition, Ron should be delighted with the news (albeit non confirmational) but as they say, Philately begins where the catalogue ends. An unashamed plug for Ron and Eunice's Home page a must for anybody who loves postal history and entires of GB -/index.html (more Banana benders :) |

First, let me say Penguins! I have just put my first Pitcairn islands stamps to bed in their album this week, but don't have that particular issue yet. I have the Pitcairn Islands Specialized Stamp Catalog updated through 2008 at home but won't be there until later. I'll see what it has to say and can send you a .pdf copy of the page later in the week when I get back to the office if you'd like. It is published by the Pitcairn Islands Study Group - a really friendly bunch of people. Are you interested in all PI philately, or just that related to the crown(s)? As I usually do before I actually start a collection, I've been doing a lot of reading on the Bounty, the mutiny, Bligh's fantastic voyage and a lot about the sex abuse scandals up though this year. I didn't know if you were familiar with the story - especially since 1999 - and what's happening on the island now. |

Hello All, We had a collection of Pitcairn which we sold many years ago - should have held on to it, particularly remembering what we were paid for it! I still have a selection of plate blocks of that particular definitive issue which is how the $1 variety cropped up. We think that we also got rid of the Bounty Day miniature sheet at that time so now Eunice is missing it from here Miniature Sheet collection. So if anyone has a spare of that issue (not sure of the year as we have no catalogue to check) we would be happy to trade or buy. It was designed by E W Roberts and printed by Questa (information taken from the empty page in the collection) We must have had a senior moment many years ago. Thanks for all the information regarding the catalogues and I intended doing a google search for the Pitcairn Island study group and asking them about it but got sidetracked. Will try that anyway. Rod - thanks for the website plug! Cheers Ron |
