My most recent acquisition. The curious thing about this is the sender "Chris C. Cox" who mailed it on Sep 10 appears to have also signed it "C C Cox" on Sep 15 1868.

Can anyone tell me anything about this cover? It's a bit dirty; can it be cleaned or is it best left as is?

Marty

I can't help with the cover, but I can re cleaning. I occasionally clean up a really grubby cover with an art-quality eraser. Very gently and very sparingly.

It just removes some of the grime.

Your cover doesn't look like it needs any cleaning

Thanks for the tip on art-quality erasers. I had forgotten about those. The cover is dirtier than it looks in the photo, so that is why I asked.

I'd suggest, in general, one can do more damage trying to clean an
item, that what is actually achieved. Best to leave as is, peripheral
attention and spot cleaning OK.
If a really important cover then leave it to the professionals.

Quite true. I also collect GB QEII pre-decimal FDC's, some of which can be grubby. They get the eraser treatment. I have been known to dampen older, creased covers and flatten them out though. It takes great care, but it's eminently do-able.

Nice site jubilee. And thanks to both of you for both the caution and the can-do advice. I might try the art quality eraser but I would first like to know if the cover has more than minimal value.
