The first photo is of the Aussie watermarks, this usually determines which Scott number coincides with the stamp,

This is a Scott # 12 1913 typo(Scott # Wmk 8) perf 12 gray and yellow
this is what we call an Aussie first watermark 6
this also has a heavy TPO cancellation but not to bad for the price,

Next is a Scott # 44 1915 (Scott # Wmk 9)perf 12 grey and yellow
this is an Aussie second watermark 7
this does have some short perf's on the bottom

All in all not to shabby

regards Harry

Thanks Dave for posting your Roo,I'm surprised yours was used as a revenue or late fee,I think the TPO was one of the reasons why I liked this stamp though heavily cancelled it too was at the right price.
regards Harry

I can't imagine what 5/- was paying as a Late Fee (as the Late Fee was 3d at the time if I recall correctly). This one was in my Mum's old album. Three torn corners and one very badly repaired one!

I've seen British postage due stamps used for the collection of customs fees (import duties / taxes - thus the £5 To Pay stamps). In the 1909 series of Australian postage dues, there was even a £1 value. But in the 1922-25 set, nothing was valued higher than 6d. In fact, no postage due stamp with a value of greater than 1/- was issued again until 1953. Perhaps customs duties (or some other form of revenue) was collected with postage due stamps in the olden days (thus the high values), as the collection of duties would be the same as the collection of postage due (collected from the addressee upon delivery). Your stamp appears to be cancelled with a 1937 date, beyond the usage period for these postage dues, so in that case it might make sense to use a regular high value postage stamp rather than using up endless amounts of small value postage dues.

Just a guess!

Ryan

I'll add what little I know, late fee was a small charge for posting letters
after closing time, and around 1935 I think it was 5d.
The late fee cancel on your 5 bob, may be just a part strike
from an adjacent stamp, or, used merely to cancel the stamp in laziness
with changing the hammer. You would think it part of a parcel strike.
