Hi All,

Okay, I'm getting together the easier things that is necessary when one collects stamps. I saw that Scott Stamp magazine is now part of Linn's. Bummer, because I was hoping to get a subscription to that magazine. Maybe later, but what I was wondering if there was a smaller catalog that I could invest in?

I've seen the way that the catalog has grown in volumes from checking every now and then on the library shelves, and I was amazed. Is there a publisher that has a smaller, easier catalog to use? Maybe not as expensive? I know that there is software that can be used as well, but until I get back into the collecting and organizing of what I will have, I want to do it the old fashioned way for a bit or until it gets on my nerves....lol

For worldwide do you mean?

There is Scott Classic Catalog which in a one volume book has countries of the world from 1840-1940 only. Also on Cds. Beware of CDs from Asia.

There is also buying Scott Standard 6 volumes used and a few years old for much cheaper.

There is buying only the pages of the country you are working on off of ebay (cut out of a catalog) for a cheap price.

There is going to the library.

Depends on if you want to work on really new stamps or not. You could buy an older 1-2 volume Scottt for cheap, although in all of the above shipping is a consideration of course.

Buying older is good when you are just getting used to it all again and do not really have to have current up to date prices.

Puzzler,
Yes, I was talking about a worldwide catalog. Scott Classic doesn't have a volume for anything beyond 1940? I'm guessing that Asian CD's have a flaw in the disc's themselves that doesn't mix with U.S. electronics? I'll probably go for the older sets as you suggested. Thanks.

Donna,

The Cds from Asia are sometimes illegal copies of original Scott catalogs. The regular Scott Cds cost the same as the paper catalogs, a lot $80 + each I think. The problem with the bad copies are that they might not work or continue to work, and there is something about a security key issue with them too I think. Not sure completely.

Scott Classic just goes to 1940. After that it's the Scott standard from 1840-2011 etc in 6 (or possibly more) volumes because of the explosion / large number of stamps after the 1940's.

Check the threads / topics on here and responses by member khj about Scott catalogs. He had some knowledge about the beginnings of the colour issues of these catalogues and the accuracy and problems with the first few years of the printings.

My best advice is to not put off buying catalogues because of the price.

Check your local libraries. If the copies they have are more than 3-4 years old, they may be looking to update, and will sell the old ones. Join a local stamp club. Someone will be sure to have an old set, or a volume or two, lying around that they may share with you.

Worst case? Buy one volume at a time, and focus on the stamps in that catalogue first!

jubilee,
I would love to own a new edition catalog, but my piggy bank has filed for bankruptcy and was last seen in the vinicity of Capital Hill. My local library does have a yearly book sale, so maybe I'll keep a watch out for it's next event. Now buying a volume at a time might work if I can ask my family to buy one volume per holiday like Easter, Christmas, birthday, Mother's Day, and I think that I'd eventually have all the volumes....lol

Hi Donna.......

The problem with CD's of Scott Cats from Asia are that they sometimes have viruses embedded in them.

Here are two possiblities.......the first is an ebay auction list of Scott Cats.....it is sometimes possible to get a set a few years old at a decent discount from the new set price.

The second is a seller that sells and auctions Scott Cats by individual countries........I've bought from him several times and have had no problems at all.

Donna, I am currently using 2008 scott catalogs..they are probably going for in the neighborhood of 15 dollars or less now on ebay...i will get 3 years out of them and then probably purchase a G through I catalog which has a lot of good countries in it..Germany, Great Britain,Ireland, Italy etc..if you are a strong U.S. collector you could purchase the Volume 1 which has the U.S. and the A to B countries..you will see from the comments here on the board on what some folks are making do with..i paid $175 to go from 2003 to 2008..i felt it had to be done..but I would prefer to spend the money on stamps rather than books if possible !!
