Nothing super duper here but I like these stamps, all the different types and colours.

Not having a handy dandy catalogue is difficult at times.

I think these stamps are from the series called Marie Gallant (the name of the lady on the stamp).

From Paris, France to Halifax, Canada.

Picture is upside down so postmark may be read.
Postmark says 'PARIS 38 / R.CLAUDE.BERNARD / 15 * / 26 I / 1949 .

Interesting shopping list Puzzler - it is in English - I wonder if it was written by the receiver in Canada? Handwriting looks different than the front...

Yes, now that you mention it, it does look that way. Also the decimal points and periods rather than the French commas.

Hello Puzzler,

The design shows Marianne, a symbol of the French republic.

This particular version of Marianne was designed by Pierre Gandon who used his wife Jacqueline as the model and the design is often called the Marianne de Gandon.

Thank you nigel, it is always good to be set straight. I only had the M and the G beginnings correct! You see how the story changes as it gets passed through various people, and then there's me.

Nice grouping Rod. You are so organized I am envious. I like the gandon and the Briat myself. The Gandon is so calm and pure you can almost see into her soul, which is, I guess, the intention of the artist. The Briat is the modern version of the Gandon for me.

I think there are two engravings of the Gandon style Puzzler,
from what I can recall, look for the Marianne with really piercing eyes,
I think perhaps the later printing.

I just had to go back and look, didn't I
check her eyes on the RHS stamps

PHILATELIC TERM OF THE DAY:

When something is handwritten or stamped on a cover after it was sent through the mail, like a shopping list, or a collector writes "Ottawa, 1948:, or a business stamps it with a rubber date stamper "Received", etc.; that is called DOCKETING.

Rod, only the stamp on the right is an engraving. The majority of the values in that set, and your stamp on the left, are typographed (letterpress / surface printed) stamps.

Note that there is a second design for the larger sized high value stamps. That design is also engraved.

Ryan

Thanks David for the terminology. I had not known about docketing before.

Good info Ryan.

Rod, on the left hand stamp Marianne looks like she had too much wine the night before. The right hand engraved stamp does look smoother and clearer, much nicer.

Thanks Ryan.......of course!

"Docketing" ! I like it..thanks David.

I was remiss in not including
the famous "Marianne de Readers Digest" (spoken with a French accent)

Puzzler, I agree with BeeSee, written by the recipient,
who just maybe, be expecting the writer of the letter to be in London on 15th February
