I live in the sub-tropics on a waterfront block to the saltwater. We get the normal humidity plus a salt laden humidity from being right next to the water, a very nasty combination for the stamp collector. I thought long and hard about this issue when we moved here 23 years ago as I had a lot of mint stamps and covers. My first negative experience was to leave my postage stock book open for an hour while I went to the local post office and came home to the stamps stuck to the pages. At this point I was going to isolate a room in the house and run a dehumidifier and temperature control unit. I could not think of anything else. I never did I sold all my mint stamps and covers. Now I collect only stamps with no gum and no covers at all! I have been very happy with this decision. I made up large silica gel bags to trap the moisture in the plastic containers where I store my stock books and dry out the bags about very 4-6 weeks but this stuff is dangerous. When I touch the bags I use gloves and the plastic bags they rest on are replaced. The oven gets a full on clean afterwards as well and the kitchen is fully ventilated when drying the bags, I have no signs of storage trouble with this method in 22 years. Well that's what I did and do. KGV
