Not sure if any Aussies caught aunties "The gruen transfer" but it was a bit of a hoot. (but would make great postmarks)
Ahead of their screening on ABC-TV's THE GRUEN TRANSFER tonight, pitches from two Australian Ad agencies have created a media storm far away in a tiny mining town in Canada– and created an international online debate.
On THE PITCH in week, Cooch (Perth) and Ursa (Sydney) were asked to sell the unsellable – Their brief: Try to attract international tourists to the remote French Canadian province of.... Asbestos
The agencies took two different approaches; Ron Samuel from Cooch believes most holiday destinations are made after extensive internet research and encourages tourists to a website, while Denis Mamo from Ursa suggests that other towns around the world with similar bad names such as Newfoundland; Accident, Puke, and Boring, Oregon should adopt the slogan 'Bad Name, Great Destination.'

Is WA behind the times, or have you see this week's Gruen Transfer, Rodney? Amid rising speculation that WA is contemplating secession from the Australian Federation (now that opens up the possibility of the revival of a dead stamp-issuing entity!) we were treated to the concept of the Cashed Up Bogan Proof Fence or the AFL finally being able to play international matches in the WFL. Good fun. |

That's all very interesting, but what truly caught my eye when reading this thread were the ads between the postings. At 8:30pm, Saturday, July 3 I am seeing three distinct ads for "Ottawa Asbestos Removal" - a company with which I am already familiar. It still strikes me as a bit freaky when I realize how "connected" we are to the Internet and its content is at least partially driven by our specific connection to our own Internet Service Providers.
By the way...Asbestos is a town in the province of Quebec. Asbestos is not a province. Its namesake is the dreaded, carcinogenic substance used for so long as an insulation material.

Thanks for the clarification guys, that was the ABC's commentary, not mine. (not that I would have known, though)
Overall it was a nice humurous expose, and the people of Asbestos were lovely :)
We in Perth have our own carcinogenic blue asbestos town "Wittenoom" which has now been closed down.
22crows: I think we are closer than you think to International Australian Rules footy. (without us seceding) I note we have just dreafted our first Ugandan player :)

BeeSee - thanks for clarifying the clarification I offered. Clarity has been further achieved by the confirmation by sylvain.m of your confirmation of my clarification.
It's all so very convivial.
