Local History In New York And The Catskill Mountains

I am not a stamp collector, but rather interested in documenting the local history of my town (Gilboa), county (Schoharie), and region (the Catskills Mountains).

I would like to hear from any philatelist who could give me background information on postage stamps celebrating historic personalities (Timothy Murphy, David Ellerson, Ned Buntline, etc.), artifacts (Catskill Mountain resorts, day liners, and railroads), or geography and geology.

I would like to include articles on these various topics in the newsletter that I publish and which is online at gilboahome.com.

Milton Berle is depicted on a US Stamp


To mark his 75th year in show business, Milton Berle, the onetime king of TV, received shtick instead of a scepter.

Sunday, he and his comedic buddies returned to the Concord Hotel, one of the last of the legendary Catskill Mountain resorts where young performers, including Berle, once found steppingstones to Broadway and Hollywood. Billed as a "roast," the fete wound up as a schmaltzy celebration of a vanished era in entertainment history, punctuated by jokes already old when the guest of honor was young.

Freddie Roman, the master of ceremonies, noted that the comedians seated alongside the 82- year-old Berle were hardly spring chickens either.

"On this whole dais," announced Roman, a Borscht Belt veteran himself, "there is only one prostate left."

Gerry I will keep you in mind..i live in Red Hook accross the river from the mountains...we were up to North Lake twice in the last couple of weeks..i always check for old postcards of the area !!
