Barb, just by way of a polite critique, I would find the image 80% more pleasing, if you took just 1 cover and offerred it in greater detail. We do not see many US covers downunder, and yours are just teasingly too small to appreciate. It would be nice if we coud read the cachet on the top one for example. I think the clerk was rather unkind by striking the brace and the block of 4 twice. thanks for posting |

I hope you are joking SV, remember Caviar is best in small doses. I am always keen to see Ken Boll covers, (even though he used the German "Bern" here) and to a lesser degree Staehle, both from Cachet Craft. |

I was trying to give you more variety in a single post. Who knew you couldn't see it? Not I. I'll aim to do better in the future. Here's better view of Cover which also is overstruck ? at the bottom? "One Hundred Forty Third Anniversary of the Establishment of the United States Post Office in the Administration of George Washington. United States Post Office Department Laying of the Corner Stone in the New Post office Department Building Washington September 26, 1932" |

Thanks Barb, I think the employee had 100 covers on the table, a stamp and a green tin of ink. It was the end of the day, and she plonked the stamp down hapzazardly and hit your cover twice. I have an image somewhere of girls cancelling FDC's of a Pacific Island group. Thousands of FDC's and what, six or seven clerks. |

Setting aside any discussion of value, rarity, etc... My eyes are drawn back to that first one. Probably the least valuable of the 3, but certainly the most interesting. I am a novice cover collector, so I probably dismiss cover that a seasoned veteran would catch. I just go by what cover catches my attention, makes me do a double take, or otherwise mesmerizes me. Anyway, that first one is tops in my book! |

Hmmmm.... Something else caught my eye.
I have a group of cover addressed to a man named "Farnsworth". I want to say it was addressed to Missouri... :getting excited:
Now I have to dig them up... it'll keep me from sleeping tonight. Mine are 1950s-60s FDC though. Mostly uncacheted IIRC. Maybe your recipient's son... grandson? That would be neat. |

I see the Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps & Covers on ebay, Amazon and a few others the price after 2006 goes up dramaticly. do you think an additional $50 for a few years newer say 2006 Vs 2010 is worth $50? I never owned one so I dont know what changed |

For the most part, prices on common items change very slowly. I have a 2009 copy of Scott's US Specialized, and my last copy before that was a 2000. As a rough guide, I've looked at the value of the first FDC of each decade (using the least expensive variety if there are multiple types). 1930 2c Massachusetts Bay Colony, $2.00 (2000) / $2.00 (2009) 1940 1c Washington Irving, $2.00 (2000) / $4.50 (2009) 1950 3c American Bankers Assoc., $2.00 (2000) / $2.75 (2009) 1960 4c Washington Credo, $1.25 (2000) / $1.25 (2009) 1970 6c Natural History, $1.50 (2000) / $1.50 (2009) 1980 15c W.C. Fields, $1.75 (2000) / $2.00 (2009) 1990 25c Idaho Statehood, $1.25 (2000) / $1.25 (2009) For common items, the biggest value in a new catalogue is in getting the listings of the new stamps. Common stuff usually stays pretty constant in pricing - the high dollar items can really climb, however. Ryan |

Thanks guys,
Thanks Ryan for that year to year match,
I think I'll look for an affordable 2006-2008 that should work pretty well.

Edwin, go on Amazon dot com and type "Scott Specialized". I just did and you can pick up either a 2006 or 2007 USED copy for less than $11 shipped to your door (I assume you are in the US) |
