Siegel Auction Galleries announced today the final results for their 2,000-lot sale of U.S. Stamps.

The sale total was $3.067 million hammer ($3.527 million with the 15% buyer's premium).

Solid support for all grades and categories came from bidders who participated by phone, internet, in person or through agents. Some of the realizations for high-grade stamps were astounding, including $105,000 hammer for the 10c Panama-Pacific (PSE Gem 100) and $15,500 hammer for the 8c Kansas (Gem 100).

The highest realization was $170,000 hammer for the $5 Columbian imprint strip in Mint NH condition, which is one of the finest commemorative multiples in existence.

The complete prices realized may be downloaded from Siegel's website at http://siegelauctions.com/.

Theres no doubt that stamp collecting at the high end is alive and well ! I took a couple of my friends from Ottawa to the Roosevelt home in Hyde park last Fall..the park ranger that took us through the house gave an excellent talk..he mentioned Roosevelts stamp collection and said that the stamps themselves were not of very great value..but being they belonged to Roosevelt they commanded a premium at auction..i can understand this..i am sure Roosevelt received stamps from dignataries far and wide but he probably did not spend huge sums himself on very rare items !!

Tom and Phil, I'm guessing the two of you accounted for at least $.5 M of that total!

Yes, I try to limit myself to 300 large for any one auction, but sometimes I just can't help myself and I run it up to half a mil.
