Maybe to help sorting the completed envelopes when they were received back at the Dana company so that envelopes marked S would be treated one way (sent to a particular desk or department) and those marked with other letters would be treated according to the handstamped letters?

Certainly a possibility... but I was thinking that if it were company driven, the size and direction would be same.? Yes, No, Maybe so?

Depends on how long the 3c embossed stamp was in use for. Maybe the different sized and positioned Ses had been changed over time to match different sized envelopes and also different ways of sorting. Say, for instance, if the company found that putting the S sideways helped in reading it or something? Guesses.
