They have been soaked and the bottom is detached, but it almost looks as tho they should be together. I'm not good enough at cancels to tell. Maybe they were just together because they were like numbers?

They do not belong together, if you look closely
you can see the "footprint" of the "duplex" cancel
alongside the CDS (circular date stamp)

The US mute oval cancel,
that has to take the Oscar for world's worst cancel
I think I actually prefer the marker monkey to that.

I am not aware of the conditions for the mute cancel,
perhaps just used for parcels etc?

By marker monkey are you talking about the "football" cancel? with the various numbers and letters and more in it?

Rod is referring to postal workers who cancel postage stamps with marking pens.

I've noticed they sometimes get creative when they run out ink. Over the years, I've received mail apparently cancelled by shoeprint and even by tire treadmarks! (Obviously, more than just the stamp got whacked.)
