In the August 16 digital edition of Linn's on page 26 there is illustrated, as part of an auction, a 1 cent national park stamp, Scott # 740. Attached to the stamp, but separated by a perforation is a continuation of the design showing a waterfall. There are also two more parts of the design at the top, also separated by perforations.

It is described as #740 with color remarque. I have no idea what this is.

Does anyone have an explanation?

I found this definition at yourdictionary.com but it is the first time I've run across this definition; it doesn't fit with my understanding of the term:

# a mark, esp. a small design or sketch, made on the margin of an engraved plate and appearing only on proofs, to identify a particular stage of the plate

I understood a remarque to be a drawing that an artist puts on the margin of a print to personalize it, or otherwise add some value. Some artists add a remarque to a certain number of copies of a print...

So this would be a drawing placed in the previously blank selvage attached to the stamp?

That's the part that I'm missing...the definition, which might fit what you are describing, implies it is added to the plate and then printed.

My understanding of the term is/was to describe something added to the paper margin, by the artist, after printing. (And in the context of art-gallery artwork, and not "philatelic" artwork, if that makes sense.)

The term probably carries both meanings. (?)

Askphil's definition:
Added Art: addition of original art to the margins of a stamp, aka remarque.

May I add this for suggestion?

bobgggg, that is a really nice duck stamp. It exactly illustrates what I saw in Linn's--the portion on the selvage continuing the design of the stamp.

Why have I never come across this before? It would seem to be a fairly common thing for someone with too much time on their hands to do.
