Hello Barb, preprinted with an image of the stamp that indicates that particular postage to which it was designed. Letter sheet: postal stationery with a preprinted stamp or postage amount which is then folded and sealed to resemble a standard envelope; early usage did not have the preprinted stamp.
What about "prepaid"? does that explain it better? meaning the card has a postage value pre printed on the card, if used for which it was designed, requires no postage stamp.
On U.S. Postal Stationery - envelopes and postal cards, preprinted usually means that the item has a printed sender's or return address. The back may have have a printed or handstamped advertisement or message (you see these on a lot of fraternal organization related material). When you have unused postal stationery, the ones with the "preprinted" addresses, messages, ads, etc. catalog for less than those without...usually. Some advertisements and messages may add to the value if they are in demand. A lot of these items were preprinted in bulk before being used and never were used postally. Hope that clears it up. Will
