Yay! phil, this forum rocks
I would have liked a bigger scan, but that's fine
I really was curious to see (and compare) her face.

She is Antiope, princess of the greek myth
from a painting by Correggiocalled "Jupiter and Antiope"
You have quenched the curiosity

Well, show and tell can be a little risque! ?

Correggio's work, with Jupiter as a Satyr, lifting a cloak off Antiope and Cupid.

No thanks Phil,
but appreciate your offer.
I put it on my "want" list, and it will turn up (I hope :)
I am surprised Scott list the correggio connection, that's a bit of a wow.
for a 500 years timespan, correggio's faces are as modern as today.
When he painted those, Christopher was heading for the new world.
Copper knickers suggested the earth was not the centre of the universe,
and something of interest for Tony, bottled beer was invented in London.

You'd think with that kind of headstart, they'd be further along by now...if they'd only incorporated refrigeration they could have ruled the world...

Here is a scan to hold your place while you hunt up that original...

Thanks cjd, lovely scan.
takes the focus back to the topic of the stamp,
and a big thanks to medicine, we do not see so many
examples today of that terrible, terrible disease.
