1847 Stampless Folded Letter - New Orleans To Boston

This is a stampless folded letter with a blue single circle postmark NEW ORLEANS, La./JUN 5 and 10 rate marking addressed to Geroge Howe, Esq., Boston.





On it is the notation, "Given to me by Delf Norona - APS 44th convention 1929.

What year do we think this was written? Obviously it was a time when everybody in Boston knew George Howe.....

The letter is dated June 5, 1847.

As for being know in an area, it can still happen today, especially in small, rural towns. I had a P.O. Box in a small town not too many years ago and asked the postmaster if I could leave off the "Post Office Box XXX" part of the address to save paying for the extra words in classified ads, and he said sure. Everyone (two full time and one part timer) knew me there.

That reminds me of a story I read in 1972 in a Chicago newspaper about speed skater Diane Holum, who was from Northbrook, Illinois. After she won a gold medal in the Winter Olympics that year, a fan from somewhere in Europe sent her a letter addressed to "Diane Holum, Northbrook near Chicago, USA," and the post office got it to her.

Just today, we received a congratulations card from my wife's grandmother. Somehow, she managed to forget to put our street address on the envelope.

It had just my wife's name and the city, state, and zip code. Lucky for us, somebody at the post office was feeling generous enough to figure out the rest of it. (Especially since it contained a check! ) And trust me, neither of us come anywhere close to Olympic gold medalist fame.

So whatever some people may say about our postal system, right now all I've got to say about our local office is:
