I'm having some difficulties. Some of my early stuff matches Scott numbers in my 1931 catalog. Some doesn't. I'm wondering if there is a "conversion table" or some documentation resource from when they made the changes.

Thanks

Thanks.

Every year, in each volume, Scott has a page showing all the Additions/Changes/Deletions to the Scott catalog numbers in that volume (yeah, sometimes they leave a couple out, but for the most part seems to be fairly complete). Obviously, "Additions" does NOT include new issues.

I used to make copies of each of these pages before I discarded/archived each catalog, but no longer do so because it is too tedious and I rarely use it. It's easier to just use a new catalog. There might be a website somewhere that chronicles all the Scott number changes over the years. I've never tried to look for one.

bfranton, I think you may treat yourself to a newer catalog. 1931 is a long time ago.

I have a 2006 also; but I'm working on the pre-1900. There are some big discrepancies in the numbers. They match to the 1931. Since I'm so new to all this, and they are the most unique, I'm having difficulties matching them up to 2006 and I was looking for chart or table.

Barb, I think you will find it easier to simply quit using the 1931 catalog and re-ID your stamps using the 2006 catalog. I only keep older catalogs as reference, not for IDing.

I don't have a 1931 catalog, but in the older catalogs I have, Scott originally did not separate the airmails/officials/postagedues...; later on, they did separate them, but assigned them a "high" Scott number (e.g., 1000+). Eventually they realized that the regular postage stamp listing would exceed 1000 for some countries. So, some time after WWI, Scott did a massive renumbering to separate those stamps into sections which today we refer to as "Back-of-Book" (BOB) listings and gave them pre-fixes before the catalog number (e.g., B#, C#, J#...

There have only been a relatively small number of catalog number changes since the 2006 edition. I really recommend you simply use the 2006; and that it would be easier to re-ID any stamps for which you originally used the 1931 catalog to ID. Even if you could find a chronicle of Scott number changes over the years, you will have to check each year, because some Scott catalog numbers have changed more than once; it is not possible to make a un-ambiguous single master list. Just my opinion.
