I'm not really sure what to look for with these stamps

what are excise stamps?
what are the 0700 overprints or some sort of cancel?

The blue & orange stamp are Revenue, while the overprinted stamps are precancels> The number indicates the city & PO it is from.

Here is a basic list of pre cancel numbers Edwin.

AFAIK only one stamp had a red pre cancel

WOW, I'll need 6 more books if I try for all that, I think I'll just tuck my 2 in my book and duck and cover for now
I till have a lot of basic learning to do.

Here are additional precancels from Canada in the same format as the ones pictured.

X275 Halifax, NS
X809 Moncton, NB
X910 St. John, NB
X945 Sackville, NB
3070 London, ON is an error should have been 3470
