Hi folks,

Just getting back into collecting and picked this guy up recently.
It's a MNH #272.
I'm trying to get my head around how to grade a stamp and am wondering what grade would you say it is?

Thanks,

Brian

Nice Scan!
a little higher resolution,
a tweak with the orientation,
and you could be amongst the Family's top scanners :)

Thanks for the info guys but I can't take credit for the scan, pulled from the auction site....
Scott 09 shows $225 for this as MNH, so think I made out ok at $35.

Yes, looks like you did very well,
ony 2 "pulled perfs".

Here is my example of the 8c sherman
(one of around 114 x 8c stamps in the US catalogue)

The line on the RHS? any ideas? nomenclature?
I have only reference to "Centre Lines" as a guide
in dividing a sheet of stamps.

Would this may be a booklet pane stamp perhaps?

The explanations below does not necessarily apply to all stamps, because the press sheet configurations/markings changed over time.

In this particular case/configuration, the guide line is also the center line; although that is not always true in other cases.

No, it is still a sheet stamp. The original press sheet of 400 was cut into 4 panes of 100 stamps. The original sheet was cut roughly along the guidelines (centerlines). There is a straight edge (no selvage) on the side that is cut; depending on the cutting accuracy, you may or may not see the guideline. Therefore, the pic you showed is often called a straight edge copy. Normally, it is considered less desirable. It affects the value so much, that it is often the target of reperforation.

Thanks khj,
samuel grossman, showed the guidelines as perforated,
which threw me off the scent.
So I shall tag my copy as a "straight edge copy"
